There you are late at night. The lights are off. Your body is relaxing. Crickets are lulling you towards the abyss and your eyelids are ever so slooooowly drifting down… Maybe you’ve already got your drool on just a little bit… when
“WHAM!” Your whole body feels like it’s just been launched off of the Empire State Building. Hello, Myclonic Jerk! This is a naturally occurring muscle spasm that happens to us just before we drift off into the sweet spot of sleep. We’ve all had one a time or two.
I have been blessed with some of my best ideas by the Myclonic Jerk. What I mean by this, is that the hazy moment just before slumber is often my MOMENT OF INSPIRATION.
It’s as though ideas just hover above me, tantalizingly out of reach while I’m trying too hard. When I let go and just stop, “WHAM!” there it is. The idea, the hook, the solution that suddenly becomes clear, focused, and in color. There’s no better way to get a good night’s sleep than resting assured you’re on to something great.
I did not realize that this was a human phenomenon. I thought it was just me! But, alas it’s expanded upon in this article from Psychology Today. These AHA! moments are worth investigation.
So, sometimes you have to stop and let go.
Trust me, some jerks are worth having around!
